The Short Version
What Data We Process
Account Data
SiteWinds does not require account creation. We do not collect usernames, passwords, or account profiles.
App Preferences Stored Locally
SiteWinds stores settings such as your selected home launch, favorites, and visualization preferences locally on your device to make the app work as expected. This data never leaves your device.
Weather Snapshot Requests
When you use SiteWinds, the app requests real-time or near real-time wind readings (and recent reading history) from the SiteWinds API for map regions around selected coastal and inland sites. These requests are made by map region, not by your personal GPS coordinates.
Subscriptions and Entitlements (RevenueCat)
SiteWinds requires an active subscription ("SiteWinds Pro") to access the full app experience after the initial free preview period. When you subscribe, restore purchases, or when the app checks your subscription status, RevenueCat processes subscription and entitlement information so the app can verify access, restore purchases across devices, and keep your subscription status in sync.
We do not require an account for Pro access. If you contact support, we may use the anonymous RevenueCat app user ID to help look up your subscription state.
Optional Device Location
SiteWinds includes an optional My Location feature. If you turn it on in Settings and grant location permission, the app reads your device's precise GPS coordinates to show your current position on the map.
- Location is optional. The app works fully without it
- Location is only requested when you enable it in Settings, not during onboarding
- Location is used for map display on your device and is not sent to PostHog, Sentry, or our weather API as part of your user profile
- Weather requests still use map regions around selected sites, not your personal GPS coordinates
Anonymous Usage Analytics (PostHog)
We use PostHog (hosted in the EU) to understand product usage and improve the app. Analytics are sent over HTTPS using a custom integration. We do not use PostHog autocapture, session replay, or screen recording.
SiteWinds sends only these explicit events:
coverage_selected: when you choose an Australian state or territory (during onboarding or in Settings), includingstateIdand whether the source was onboarding or a settings changecoverage_engaged: the first time per state, per app session, that you tap a weather station marker to view details, includingstateId, weather provider, andstationId
Each event also includes:
- A random anonymous identifier generated and stored on your device (
distinct_id) - A build/runtime label (
workerTarget) used to distinguish app environments
We use this data to understand which regions and stations users engage with so we can prioritize coverage and product improvements. PostHog may also receive standard request metadata (such as IP address) as part of normal web traffic; see PostHog's privacy policy for how they handle that data. Analytics data is retained for up to 12 months.
Crash and Performance Diagnostics (Sentry)
We use Sentry to diagnose crashes, app hangs, and performance issues. Sentry may receive:
- Crash reports, stack traces, and error messages
- Performance and timing data (for example, app startup duration)
- Diagnostic context such as platform, app version, and which coverage region was selected at startup
This data helps us fix bugs and improve reliability. It is separate from PostHog usage analytics. Sentry is operated by Functional Software Inc. (USA); data may be stored and processed in the United States.
What We Do Not Collect
- ❌ User accounts, passwords, or profile logins
- ❌ Advertising identifiers (IDFA) or data for ad targeting
- ❌ Your GPS coordinates sent to our analytics, crash reporting, or weather servers
- ❌ Photos, files, or media from your device
- ❌ Data from other apps
- ❌ Personal information sold to data brokers
How We Use Data
- Deliver real-time wind data and site-coverage functionality
- Process subscriptions and restore Pro access
- Maintain app stability and performance
- Understand feature usage to guide improvements
- Show your optional on-device map location (when enabled)
No Advertising and No Ad Tracking
SiteWinds does not display advertisements. We do not use advertising SDKs, and the app does not collect or share any data for advertising purposes. We do not request access to the iOS Identifier for Advertisers (IDFA) or use any fingerprinting techniques for ad targeting. The app's iOS privacy manifest declares NSPrivacyTracking = false and an empty collected data types array.
International Data Transfers
SiteWinds is operated from New South Wales, Australia. Some of our third-party service providers are located outside Australia and may store or process your data overseas:
- PostHog: EU-hosted; data processed within the European Union
- Sentry: operated by Functional Software Inc., USA
- RevenueCat: operated in the USA
Where data is transferred outside Australia, we take reasonable steps to ensure overseas recipients handle it in a manner consistent with the Australian Privacy Act 1988, including by relying on the contractual protections and privacy commitments of each provider.
Service Providers
We use the following third-party services to operate SiteWinds. They process data on our behalf and under their own privacy policies:
Data Security and Retention
- All data transmission uses HTTPS
- We keep data collection limited to what is required for app operation and improvement
- PostHog analytics data is retained for up to 12 months
- Sentry diagnostic data is retained in accordance with Sentry's default retention settings
- Local device data (preferences, anonymous IDs) is removed when you uninstall the app or clear app storage
Your Privacy Rights and Data Deletion
Depending on where you live (including under the Australian Privacy Act 1988, GDPR, and CCPA/CPRA), you may have rights to access, correct, or delete personal information we hold about you, or to object to certain processing. Because SiteWinds does not require an account, much of your data stays on your device or is stored under anonymous identifiers.
- On your device: uninstalling the app or clearing app storage removes local preferences, including your PostHog anonymous ID
- Subscriptions: purchase history is managed by Apple or Google through your store account; you can manage or cancel subscriptions in your device settings
- Analytics, diagnostics, and related requests: email sitewindscontact@gmail.com with the subject Privacy Request. Include your RevenueCat app user ID if you know it. We will respond within 30 days and, where applicable, ask our providers (PostHog, Sentry, RevenueCat) to delete or anonymise data tied to your request where reasonably possible.
Children's Privacy
SiteWinds is not directed to children under 16. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 16. If you are under 16, you must have obtained verifiable consent from a parent or legal guardian before using the app, in accordance with the Australian Privacy Act 1988. If we become aware that we have inadvertently collected personal information from a child under 16 without appropriate consent, we will take steps to delete that information promptly.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The date at the top of this page reflects the latest version. Continued use of the app after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
